What is the best work experience for careers in medicine?
While all experience in healthcare is useful, you'll be at an advantage if you have experience working with patients, doctors, and other healthcare professionals. Ultimately, the more varied your experience, the better, so try out as many things as you can, from shadowing a GP to volunteering at a hospital.
How do I get work experience in the medical field?
There are a few ways you can look for work experience in the medical field, including: - Preparing a CV stating your desire to volunteer and handing it in to places nearby related to healthcare. This includes places like general practice surgeries, hospitals, hospices, care homes, and so on. - Keeping up-to-date with medical journals for news about the NHS - Trying to get in contact with some medical professionals – building a network will open you up to opportunities you otherwise wouldn't have found - Looking at shadowing other healthcare professionals, such as pharmacists or physiotherapists, if you can't shadow a GP - Making use of organisations like Volunteering England and St John's Ambulance, as they may be able to help
What qualifications do you need to become a doctor?
In the UK, you'll need a degree recognised by the General Medical Council to become a doctor, which will take five years. You'll then need to take the following steps to become a doctor: - Complete a two-year foundation course of general training - Complete five to eight years of specialist training, depending on your speciality If you already have a degree, you can take a four-year graduate entry route into medicine. However, these are highly competitive, and entry requirements differ, so be sure to check in advance what's required with the admissions department. When applying for a medicine course, you may have to complete one of the following entry tests: - University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) - BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) - Graduate Medical Schools Admissions Test (GAMSAT) These tests require you to apply a variety of skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and data analysis, in addition to demonstrating the relevant scientific knowledge. Medical schools require work experience, so it's vital you're proactive in looking for opportunities. You’ll also need to undertake a medical school interview.
What skills do you need to be a good doctor?
You'll need a range of skills to become a good doctor, including: - Interpersonal skills: You'll need to interact with colleagues and patients daily, often in sensitive circumstances, so interpersonal skills like communication, empathy, compassion, and so on will all be vital - Teamwork: You'll regularly collaborate with other medical professionals, so strong teamwork skills will serve you well - Attention to detail: Attention to detail ensures your patients get the best treatment and prevents potentially costly mistakes - Ability to work under pressure: You'll often work in time-sensitive, pressurised situations, so you'll need to be able to cope when these arise - Technical skills: You'll need to be proficient in key technical areas like assessing symptoms, offering diagnoses, prescribing medicine, and so on - Decision-making skills: Critical thinking and decision-making skills are potentially life-saving attributes in the medical profession - Determination: The training and education required to become a doctor is a long process, so determination is vital. Furthermore, your average day once in the role can be hectic and stressful, so you'll need a strong resolve. Learn more about a day in the life of a doctor - Passion and intellectual curiosity: The medical field is constantly evolving, so you'll need a genuine passion and intellectual curiosity to stay up-to-date with the latest news and discoveries that help you give your patients the best treatment
